Hypernovas...and Melancholia

I recently saw Von Triers' masterpiece Melancholia about depression and the end of the world by rogue planet.  I salute Von Trier and Kristan Dunst for their work.  Dunst plays Justine whose wedding night is ruined by her perception of doom from space, which materializes not so many weeks later...the tellurian giant, rogue planet Melancholia which wipes out the Earth in spectacular fashion (shown at the beginning of the film to keep the drama fixed on the characters.)

The next day I learned of Eta Carinae.  No, it's not a rogue planet, its a supermassive star which astronomers believe will very soon go hypernova (a really, really, really BIG supernova).  The odds are better than not that the gamma bursts emitted from the dying star could vaporize the Earth's atmosphere, which would suck.

Somedays, synchronicity's a bitch.
