Okay, let me try this out here (I'm still working out the bugs):
You have the poles of established belief:
Up here: Materialism. Scientific absolutism.
(Reality - the Interstitial average between the poles of meta-reality)
Down here: Magic, Supernatural, anything goes
I submit that our reality moves constantly between these two poles in the interstitial area. Human perceptive devices (the senses) take the average as a general rule, but sometimes, depending on the belief system of who's looking, reality can tend either way. There is more meta than real reality. Sometimes, the miraculous holy man is using tricks, sometimes it's miracles. Depends who's looking--ie. the preconceptions of the observer determines which part of the meta-reality spectrum reality manifests in.
Read Hofstatdter's "I am a Strange Loop" (if you haven't already), and you will see that the up-here to down-here is on a spectrum. What our brain does is map itself into different configurations on the same material substrate. There are an infinite number of these alternate mappings, each opening up a new layer of reality. Hofstadter's Theatre analogy speaks to this directly, and it doesn't take much to extrapolate from there to magic. It's ultimately not a matter of using "more" of your brain to perceive alternate states, it's a matter of tweaking the mapping. Understand Gödel, and you will have new material on your next DMT remap. Math is your armor.
